MS Research Training & Education:

MS Research charity is raising £1 million to fund research particularly in to resolving some of the problems of symptoms currently difficult to treat like fatigue, incontinence, deteriorating mobility and intention tremor. The research on tremor will develop a means of suppressing unwanted movements and restore useful function. The results will make significant progress to improve treatment and the quality of life for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Why 365? Because MS is a condition that doesn’t give those with the disease a day off. MS affects young adults and sometimes children, once diagnosed it will affect the rest of a person’s life. This means an adult life-time of  daily battle against symptoms like muscle weakness and painful spasms often with loss of mobility, fatigue, tremor, bladder and bowel problems, sensory problems, difficulty walking and visual impairment. In the UK MS affects 100,000 persons.

Multiple Sclerosis often affects walking ability. Muscle weakness and fatigue impairs walking so that even simple activities are exhausting and the abnormal leg movements cause tripping falling, spasms and back pain. MS Research charity  has supported work to enable the introduction of a state of the art muscle stimulator which fits around the leg, and provides very small electrical impulses that stimulate muscle movement to lift the foot clear of the ground. Use of this device has a dramatic effect, restoring the ability to walk almost normally. Help with walking is just one of the practical ways MS Research charity is supporting people with MS manage their illness.

MS Research charity is funding work to further the understanding of tremor, and to develop mechanisms to control arm movement with advanced orthotics and miniature robotics. This is a neglected area of disability, and one where few groups conduct research.

“Sponsor MS research for a day” is looking for groups to raise £500, and for individuals to raise at least £250 each.
