Restoration of Appearance and Function Trust
Burns, accidents, and disfiguring illnesses like skin cancer can devastate lives. RAFT carries out cutting edge research into reconstructive plastic surgery that can provide practical and affordable solutions to the problems facing hundreds of thousands of people worldwide affected by such problems.
One of the current focuses of the RAFT cutting-edge research programs is into how burns, skin injuries, and wounds such as pressure sores, can be repaired through the development of artificial skin and anti-scarring treatments. Patients suffering burns and other wounds often require life-saving skin cover. Nevertheless, even with successful treatment, such severe injuries will leave their marks. At best the scars are physical reminders of a traumatic event or disease, at worst they can be painful, disfiguring and disabling.
RAFT scientists are also investigating a groundbreaking skin replacement technology and developing new therapies to help alleviate the worst effects of scar formation without slowing the healing process. They are shedding light on skin cancer and heavily involved in research into prevention and early diagnosis of melanoma cancer.
