39 million people worldwide are blind, yet 29 million simply do not need to be.

As a blindness prevention charity ORBIS exists to eliminate avoidable blindness and restore sight in developing countries, where 90% of avoidable blindness occurs.

We work in partnership with local health professionals and members of the community to improve the quality of eye care available for people where the need is greatest.

ORBIS was one of the first blindness prevention charities working in developing countries to make childhood blindness prevention and treatment a priority. We launched our international blindness charity with its unique Flying Eye Hospital in 1982; 27 years later ORBIS has completed over 500 training programmes in 84 countries.

We do this with the help of our highly skilled volunteer medical staff who train local medical professionals who then go on to share their new skills with others giving millions of people back their sight and future as a result.

Every minute a child goes blind and up to 60% of these children do not live to reach adulthood -our challenge is enormous and urgent.
