The Refugee Council
The Refugee Council is the leading human rights charity working with refugees and asylum seekers in the UK to help them rebuild their lives in safety.
We provide vital support, practical advice, specialist care and friendship to thousands of people who have fled oppressive regimes, suffered persecution or even torture, leaving behind everything they once called home. Through our campaigns, lobbying, research and parliamentary work, we speak out for the rights of refugees. We also challenge government policy, the media and hostile public attitudes for an end to the unjust and unfair treatment of refugees.
Every year we help around 30,000 refugees across the country – over 1,000 are separated children. Most are destitute and isolated, receive very little, or no income support at all. Some are even homeless.
‘The Refugee Council provided a lifeline… it has been like a mother to me’, a Sudanese refugee.
